Yamaha Design Exhibition “Tracks”

Yamaha and Yamaha Motor have been engaged in various activities under common design themes as companies that use the same “Yamaha” brand. These projects explore the possibility of fusing the design of musical instruments and audio equipment with the design of mobility, and creates works that embody the common "Yamaha-likeness".

When I first started designing for this project, I thought what are the common emotions between two companies that make very different products. Although sound is important in both (engines and music), I felt this was a lazy way to approach it and wanted to go deeper, I was looking for more meaningful emotions that connect these companies to their users.

For me, both Music and Motorcycle Riding are essential in my life. Both of them give me a sense of Freedom and Wonder I so much love, and both create and help to embed on my brain many of my most important memories. I felt like this is a common feeling for most people and I was sure it could develop into a very relatable project.

It was time for Ideation. This phase was a collaborative, creative deep hole with our team and Yamaha Motor team coming up with interesting ways to materialize my view. My goal was to create a product that captured those emotions and that could release and revive them by those interacting with it under the theme of “Tracks”. This is a common word for both companies, even if it is used in completely different ways. We usually talk of tire tracks or music tracks, and although different, they do in some way give us the same kinds of emotion.

We started combining motorcycle parts and music elements to create a highly interactive product, one that is very playful and attractive for both kids and adults.

This project a performance device composed of vehicle parts. The concept is to connect with the entire exhibition at the venue providing that sense of enjoyment of sharing memories and “tools” in common times and places with our friends, such as in gatherings, road trips, etc., which are familiar to both companies.

His childhood dream was to be a designer. That path proved to be not an easy one coming from Portugal, but it was a rewarding path of experiences and constant growth. Now with about 10 years of working experience the feelings towards design are mixed, but exciting as he continues to move forward and solidifying his own style.
